A mother Polar Bear is followed by her two cubs across a willow-dwarf birch scrubland at the western edge of Hudson Bay. These bears are moving deliberately toward the rapidly forming sea ice pack, seen in the image background. At the extreme image top is unfrozen water of Hudson Bay. The 2008 icing is occurring at a later time than normal, leading to unusually high hunger stress for this Churchill Ursus maritimus population.
