This stunted Black Spruce sparse forest south of Churchill is growing on a thin soil mantle above the Hudson Bay plain geologic shield formation. Note the "ice pruning" which has effectively eliminated most limbs on the (image left) side of the trees from which direction the predominant wind driven ice and snow crystals arrive.
