Part of the North Entrance to the Western Heights fortifications.

The North Lines (or moats) between the Drop Redoubt and the North Center Bastion split into two near the top of North Military Road (locally known as Military Hill) and form a 150-yard long outwork known as a tenaille.

A 'standard' bridge, Bridge 1, connects North Military Road to the tenaille, and Bridge 2 (shown above) then connects the tenaille to an 80-yard long (approx) tunnel which finally emerges within the Western Heights itself.

Bridge 2 is 2/3rds 'standard' and 1/3rd drawbridge, the skeleton beams of which can be seen sticking up into the air amongst the undergrowth.

The brickwork on the lefthand side of the photo is a corner of the tenaille.

Just inside the main tunnel, smaller tunnels lead to rooms built into the moat wall (one via a spiral staircase), and further on, to underground water reservoirs.

Not any more, I'm afraid - unless, in the two years since this photo was taken, there have been further, er, 'alterations'.

When I was a kid the two drawbridge/bridge combinations and road tunnel that comprise the North Entrance were still in use by traffic.

The drawbridge in this photo guards a road tunnel which comes out here.

This photo shows the inside of the road tunnel whose surface is made out of wooden blocks.

There is also a wide air-shaft halfway along the tunnel, but I forgot to get a photo of it.
