Outer Bridge, North Entrance, Western Heights, Dover, Kent, UK (3)

The rusting skeleton of Bridge 1 connecting the North Military Road ('Military Hill') to a 150x25 yard tenaille or 'stand-alone' outwork. The Bridge 2 bridge/drawbridge combination then crosses from the far-side of the tenaille to a tunnel which finally emerges on the Western Heights.

As I have mentioned in the 'Comments' of other photos, large areas of the Western Heights (notably excluding the Citadel itself which has always been in official use) were used as a play-ground when I was a child. The above photo was taken on June 19th, 2005 when I was 54 years-old. Despite this great age, I was sorely tempted, and I mean sorely, to cross one of the I-beams (I'm biting my lip in still wanting to do it even as I write).

Part of Dover's Napoleonic defenses built on, and embedded into, the Western Heights.

Ah yes. Reminds me of walking the beams in hay barns and certain old logs across rocky streams. And if you fall ... you're afraid they'll put you in an asylum. LOL.
