This is one of the finest surviving Roman theatres in the world. Built during the reign of Marcus Aurelius 161-80 AD it seats 15,000, The elaborate structure is intact but for the upper cornice. Its architect was Xeno, whose secret formula for creating such perfect acoustics has not yet been discovered. Today it hosts a ballet festival in June and July.
