October, 2008: Early Miletus was the most important city of the Ionian League. It was the wealthiest in the area and the intellectual centre. This 1st Century BC Theatre seats 15,000, Herodotus relates that the site was inhabited by Cretans and Carians until the arrival of Nelos, son of Kodros of Athens. The intruders had no women of their own so they slaughtered the men and married their wives. This 1st Century BC Theatre seats 15,000.
