The River Nene is one of my favourite places - so much so that I wrote a book about it more than 10 years ago. That book - The River Nene From Source to Sea - is now long out of print (but fetching absurd prices on Amazon and eBay) so I'm working on a second edition... hence photographs like this one, of the Cross Keys swing bridge at Sutton Bridge. The bridge was built to accommodate both road and rail traffic, but the latter ceased in 1959 when the old M&GN line from the Midlands to East Anglia was closed by British Rail. Wouldn't that line be useful today, with all the main roads of in area clogge dup with more traffic than they can handle?
Hope you enjoy the picture!
This photograph is available as a stunning, hand-crafted print, or on canvas. Please email me on david@nenevalleymedia.com for details.

Hi David like yourself I have good memories of the bridge having worked on it from 1961 until retiring in 2001. I have seen many changes having worked on the railway prior to commencing on the swing bridge. I have read your book and found it to be of great interest, look forward to seeing a reprint in the future. The railway did cease to cross the bridge on the 28th February 1959. There was a goods line from Spalding to Sutton Bridge remain open until 3rd April 1965. This had only three trains a day to commence with, but eventually before it closed only one.
