This Greek Orthodox monastery is located near the main route from Jericho to Jerusalem. It was built in the late 5th century A.D. by John of Thebes. He became a hermit and moved here from Egypt in 480 A.D. The monastery was named St. George after the most famous monk who lived at the site – Gorgias of Koziba. Destroyed in 614 A.D. by the Persians, the monastery was rebuilt in the Crusader Period. It fell into disuse after the expulsion of the Crusaders. In 1878 a Greek monk, Kalinikos, settled here and restored the monastery, finishing it in 1901.

Anyushka, thanks for your comment! Indeed, Wadi Kelt (Qelt) is one of the magic places across the Holy Land!

from the thumbnail image it looked like it may have been of the old pueblos at Canyon de Chelley in the SW USA

Tery, you are right, many folks living under similar natural conditions found similar ways to survive. Once you should come here to compare how the Wadi Kelt canyon is similar to Canyon de Chelley!
