What kind of grasses are those? They appear to have very large plumes. Beautiful shot B-n-P.

Hi Cal - I'm pretty sure they are the Evil but Beautiful Phragmites. As a landscape architect and just someone who should be concerned about invasive plants, I'm supposed to hate them. As a photographer, it's sure hard to do that! (If I were lucky, I'd be wrong about all these stands that I say are phragmites, and they would all be the native Spartina cynosuroides - Big Cordgrass, but I think the heads are too big for them to be that.)

very well spotted they do the same here spray the new areas with barley to hold the sand back from the strong winds. we are build on sand and nothing else at all.

Bits-n-Pieces on December 7, 2008

Thanks, Steve! These spread on their own, but this area also is also pretty much sand bar. There's been a lot of erosion over on Plum Island to the south of this spot, and one house has been lost and a few others are in danger.

Thanks, Dianne! How was your week-end away?

diannemcd on December 8, 2008

Busy weekend, but caught up with lots of long lost rellies, was great. Lots of fun.

you are a Plum a chick! hate the place but still like your pictures and Surfland. :)

Bits-n-Pieces on December 15, 2008

LOL, Brian - thanks, though a litle bit closer to a Prune-hen, lol. But this wasn't even Plum Island. Horror of horrors, this was in...Salisbury! Great sunsets with the seals on the empty beach once the RVs and people all go home(LOL, now just what's not to like about that beach?) Last winter on the road out to the campground, I saw a group of 10 juvenile bald eagles flying overhead. So it'll do for me!
