Ah Ian, you are caught in the American world view: public transport is a breeze on New Year's Eve and if you don't like that regimen then use your yacht or "tinnie" and sail the harbour with 3000 other wee vessels. If you are on land, the problem is where to park your blanket once you get there, unless you choose to sit on it for an all-day picnic and come home with a good dose of sunburn at the end of it all.
But there is plenty of foreshore, many inlets, many vantage points... and if you have friends who own a penthouse above Kiribilli or you are friends with the Prime Minister or the Governor-General then you can view it all from a perfect vantage point.
This will be my view point, but it will be bigger and more spectacular and more polluting than this show put on by Mr & Mrs Howard for Mr & Mrs Bush!
New Year Greetings to you Ian. And may 2009 be fruitful, fulfilling and peaceful.

Dear Seba, Olga and Edmundo,
It is quite incredible still to me that an Australian can receive greetings from Norway, Russia and Uruguay when he posts a photo taken in Indonesia! Being born before the advent of the internet keeps the incredulity alive in me, I guess.
Thank you each for your responses of appreciation and greeting and please accept my apology for the belated reply Seba and Olga for somehow I missed your messages at the time.
None of you may ever get to Bali, but if you do you will relish it for it is a special place with a special people. And if you don't then at least you have seen this glimpse of its beauty.
Kind regards to you each,
Ian
