I've never heard this structure being called "The Old Gate" before. It has always been known as The Magazine for the fifty years almost, that I have lived in Leicester. I'm not saying you are wrong, as it does look quite like a gatehouse, and probably served that purpose too. In days of yore, when Leicester Castle was the walled town it once was, this was where armaments were stored.
