A view of the steps leading down to the Tunnel 5 system taken from just inside the overgrown entrance on the surface of the North Center Bastion.

I forgot to add the location of the system on the satellite view but have given it in that page's 'Comments'.

Tunnel 5 runs uphill from left to right and has collapsed at the top end. It is generally awkward rather than difficult to navigate - next time I'll go down and get some up-to-date photos.

You can just see the white fungus I referred to in the second Comment on the Blue Orb 1 page.

Standard Info:

The North Center Bastion is only part of Dover's extensive Napoleonic defenses - click on Western Heights and then check the tag list for all the locations covered (eg Drop Redoubt, Grand Shaft, North Entrance - more will be added as time goes on).

Two more images of Tunnel 5 have been taken from the bottom of the access steps:

1) Looking in a southerly (uphill) direction

2) Looking in a northerly (downhill) direction

Well, that might have been a good time (once the panic was over, that is) for your friend to have gone back and walked the same path all over again - and kept doing so until nothing 'touched' their shoulder.

The tunnels aren't really scary, it's just that people bring their fears with them and the tunnels 'wake' the fears up. That's the time to sort 'em out, I think - after all, no-one's born afraid, are they?
