I think in some places on the island you can see the sea on one side of the road and the lagoon on the other, like it is a dike.

Fine picture, and a document of the past as well. By now this road is probably asphalted and the trees gone.

Thanks, Steve, for letting us dream away to this place.

yap. smells old, looks old.. great picture. most of us watching it will never set foot on this island in our lives. especially if we're from the other side of the world, as romania is.

We've been in Tarawa 5 times from 2004 to 2009. Surely something changed on this remote place. But because we prefer the northern chain,we always stay at Kareas homestay (Tabon Te Keekee)on Abatao,we discovered some "old"parts of Tarawa. Here the live remained fortunately in the old style. If you ever going back to the island,go there and you will be happy. Greeting Hans and Karin from Germany

hdgleich the place has changed so much i look at GE and wonder if its the same place so its not as primitive as it was in the late 50's. no i think its best to keep the memories alive rather than ruin them. the natural life they live has been taken away from them sadly. these photos are from my fathers slides from the 50's the main road around the island. steve

We have been back to Abatao may 2012 till june 2012.we had a very nice stay in "our"old homestay Tabon Te Keeke of Carea and Veronica.Went to Biketawa by boat and had a look on that small island you visited long time ago (small lonely island). This is -even today-a spot of unspoiled conditions. The reason may be,that these islands are uninhabited. best regards hdgleich
