A view into the eastern end of the 60-yard (approx) road tunnel which along with Bridge 1 and Bridge 2 forms the North Entrance to Dover's Napoleonic defenses on the Western Heights.

The central section of the road is made out of the wooden blocks which can be seen in the center of the photo (they prevent sparks).

There are various tunnels leading off of this one including one going to a large underground water resevoir (there are two more resevoirs whose entrances are outside the tunnel close to where I stood when I took this photo - in actual fact, all three entrances are inter-conected by passage-ways.

It was only when I got home that I realized there's a wide circular 'chimney' half-way along the tunnel. With a little bit of scrambling into the undergrowth above I should have been able to get some photos - have to make another trip then, won't I? :)

Click for an external shot of the eastern end of the tunnel.

Standard Info:

The North Entrance is only part of the fortifications on this part of the North Downs - click on Western Heights and then check the tag list for all the locations covered (eg Drop Redoubt, Grand Shaft, St Martins Battery, North Center Bastion - more will be added as time goes on).

There is also a video of the North Entrance which has been split into two to meet YouTube requirements:

I've finally taken a photo of the air or ventilation shaft half-way down the tunnel where it surfaces above.
