La Cité de Carcassonne dans le département de l’Aude est avant tout connue comme une ville Médiévale Fortifiée ; mais la présence humaine sur cet éperon rocheux est bien plus ancienne. A un habitat gaulois implanté au 6e siècle avant J.-C. succéda à l’époque romaine un centre urbain actif. A la fin du 3e et au début du 4e siècle après J.-C., la Cité fut dotée de remparts dont les imposants vestiges apparaissent encore aujourd’hui sur les deux tiers de l’enceinte intérieure, très bien conservé et inscrit au patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO depuis 1997.
