View of the Forum Romanum from the Capitoline Hill - Rome, Italy

This one had to be post-processed quite drastically to get the colours at least a bit accurate and restore some details in the shadows. The original can be found here for comparison reasons.

The shot itself shows a couple of highlights of the Forum Romanum.

On the left one can see the arch of Septimius Severus (here from the other side), which was built in AD 203 to celebrate the victories of the Roman Emperor Septimius Severus and his sons in the two campaigns against the Partians.

The (in this shot not very detailed) single column in the centre of the photo is the Column of Phocas (here from right below it) which was the last addition made to the Forum. It wass dedicated in honour of the Byzantine emperor Phocas on August 1, 608.

In the background of the shot, behind the column of Phocas, two of the three columns and the architrave of the Temple of Castor and Pollux are visible. According to Wikipedia:

"originally built in gratitude for victory at the battle of Lake Regillus (495 BC). Castor and Pollux (Greek Polydeuces) were the Dioscuri, the "twins" of Gemini, the twin sons of Zeus (Jupiter) and Leda. Their cult came to Rome from Greece via Magna Graecia and the Greek culture of Southern Italy."
