I saw this schooner leave the island of Dominica at sunset a couple days after my trip to see the Total Eclipse of the Sun from the center of Guadeloupe. It brings me back to the days of ancient explorers seeking new far-off lands. 13 friends and I chartered a 40' catamaran in the British Virgin Islands for a week, then flew down to Dominica to jump-up in Carnival and go for a two day trip to Les Saintes and Guadeloupe to get underneath the umbra of the Feb. 26th, 1998 solar eclipse. It was amazing. . . i couldn't speak full sentences for a week afterwards.

This image is made to feel romantic about the sea. I think I was still in a state of fantasy and surreal imagination from witnessing the two and a half minute total solar eclipse two days earlier - where at 2:30 in the afternoon the surrounding birds and animals became quite while the brightest sunshiny day turned to a green eeriness, then a pitch blackness of space and the light from stars and planets came out and were the only illumination next to the beads of solar bursts around the moon. My friends who had separated to get their own space to view the occurance, were now huddled together like a family of humanity protecting ourselves from a world of uncertain fear.

I also watched a total eclipse, in Munich. Had flown there from London just to see it. It was amazing to see night at midday. The thing I found most strange was 1 person who took no notice of it, he didn't once look up to see why it had got dark. He was just annoyed he couldn't find a taxi driver -guess what they were doing? It takes all kinds.

Thanks for your input on the Star Clipper. And to explain Tom Domingo's astute comment: The boat, left (south) shore land mass and palm fronds are all in one shot. The setting Sun was added in later in PS. If the sun WAS a part of the original shot, it would have glimmered over the water towards the viewer. Also a double exposure of the palm fronds were added to accentuate the dreamy quality of the moment I had there. Thanx all for your comments.

It's not "just a fake" it is a real composite, explained in previous replies of mine. The boat and landscape features were one shot and the sunset is composited in the background. Please read my previous comment. Had the Sun been in that position at the time I shot the boat, it would look very much the same with the addition of reflections of the Sun on the water. That is the position of the Sun in the West had it been setting. Thank you for your comment. I wish I could come to Sweden and shoot your lovely country. Bruce C.

This is the type of image the likes of which I have experienced no where else. That type of image was burnt into my mind and are now being reflected in my paintings. I am thankful to this photographer for documenting the type of chromatic delight that I depict in my paintings. No one would believe me when I say that I had experienced these images growing up in Portsmouth, Dominica. I spent many an afternoon sitting by the bay absorbing the colors that are now seen in my paintings.
