Comunitatea ruşilor staroveri (cunoscuţi sub denumirea de lipoveni) din oraşul Iaşi, capitala Principatului Moldovei la acea vreme, şi-a construit în anul 1780 prima lor biserică, din bârne, pe malul stâng al Bahluiului, chiar pe locul unde se găseşte astăzi actualul locaş de închinare. Deteriorată ca urmare a trecerii timpului şi a intemperiilor, biserica este refăcută din cărămidă la anul 1830, dar turnul şi clopotniţa au rămas tot din lemn. În anul 1866, are loc un incendiu care va ruina cu totul biserica. Restaurarea şi extinderea locaşului de cult al ruşilor staroveri au avut loc în perioada anilor 1872-1882, după planurile arhitectului român Ştefan Emilian şi prin subscripţie publică . În prezent, Biserica Lipovenească din Iaşi posedă o serie de icoane valoroase, realizate în stilul tradiţional al artei ruse bisericeşti.
