I remember as a child back in the early sixties our headmaster announcing that we were going to be having some new children coming to our school in Southern England.

He went on to explain that there had been a volcanic eruption and that nearly all of the residents of Tristan de Cunha had been evacuated and would not be able to go home until the volcano was considered dormant.

Most of the evacuees were placed at an old RAF camp in Calshot Near Southampton. I lived in Fawley and very soon we had these evacuees on our school bus To Hardley in Holbury. There were some awkward moments between the local kids and the newcomers but from what I can remember nothing major.

Looking at your picture I was reminded of something else the Headmaster of Hardley School said. he told us that living where they did it was unlikely that they had even seen a tree. To us children living on the edge of the New Forest this seemed incomprehensible. (The New Forest is so named because it has only been a Royal Hunting Forest for a thousand years.) Hence the description.

Eventually the island was declared safe and the evacuated islanders were told they could go home. This did not sit well with the teenagers as this was at the height of Beatle mania. I will always remember one teenage girl saying in a local newspaper that she was going to buy as many of the Beatles records as she could and play them all constantly so that by the time she got home she would be so sick of them that she would never want to hear a pop song again.

Your picture brought back memories of a period when a group of children from different ends of the earth came together in "mostly" friendship.

Thank You for the picture and greetings from Steven Sutherland in Canada.

Steven, your story was a touching one! Nothing like living some piece of history on the flesh and telling it to some others (like me!). Thanks a lot!
