...understatement - or: fishing for compliments!

It definitely does not depend on the motive but only on the perspective and light the viewer/photographer chooses!

An ugly motive can be exposed in an artistic way and a beautyful girl or gorgeous landscape can be showed in a boring way.

I understand your point. At times I have speculated that by taking a photo of a certain subject, whether or not I'm actually adding anything of merit to that image or merely replicating what was really the creation of someone else. Likewise, sometimes it's a bit difficult to work out if a viewer is voicing his appreciation for the photo itself or the subject of the photo.
