Yes, I see from checking on Google Earth that other people were lucky enough to see several horses at a time but this was the only one we saw on our visit. There is more info on the wild horses of Carrot Island at this website: home.att.net/~thepone/feral/carrot.htm. They are similiar to the feral horse herds on the other islands along the Outer banks and north along the VA coast.

We were dropped off on Carrot Island for several hours one day on a self-guiding tour. It is one of the places I find myself going back to in my mind on days that I need to relax. We wondered across the island -wading thru mudflats, meeting a local harvesting oysters and admiring his bucket full of oysters(of course I took a photo of that - but did not include it because of the people thing) & battling with sawbriars(maybe only one or two but I really remember the one I met). We came around a corner and here stood this perfect photo op. He/she was at home on his island and paid us no mind at all. Guess he is used to crazy tourist wondering around half lost. It is good it is a small island - we finally find the other side and the beach where the kids were delighted to find sand dollars at low tide. Also, for the adults, powdered sugar sand to rest on and contemplate an almost private beach. That was in 1997 so hope it is still the same unspoiled place.

I love stories of the wild horses at NC. Recently I saw the movie "Nights in Rodanthe" which had a wonderful scene at the end of these horses. ~J~

I rarely see movies - will have to try to look for that one - was it a recent release or a DVD?

What a wonderful place to visit. I've just finished reading all about it, and I'm ready to pack my bags now.

This is a beautiful horse. How fascinating to just be able to see them wandering freely around the island. I would be in heaven with such company surrounding me.

Thank you for sharing this pretty photo and interesting history of the place.

Best regards,

Mary Alice
