Wow great shot JF you are So lucky to get to see one of these beautiful animals in the wild! I am curious to know how you managed to get so close to him?

Aren't they beautiful! This was one of my favorite shots.

To answer your question, this photo was taken at the Ely, MN wolf sanctuary and they are in a big fenced enclosure with the building forming one side of the enclosure. You are inside looking out a huge plate glass window. An artificial den was created in front of the viewing area.

I was even luckier in that I went as a chaperon with a Girl Scout troop and we spent the night in the building camped out on the floor of the viewing area. They fed the wolves in front of the window in the evening and I was the only serious photographer there so had plenty of elbow room. If you check out my wolf tag you will see this same wolf checking us out. With the lights on at night he could see inside the building and found us very interesting.

My husband did see a pair of wild wolves on his morning walk on an abandoned railroad bed near our house. But as you imagined, they were much more elusive.

To think I went all the way to (100 km south of) Inuvik, NWT to see my first wolf (a white one also)

But what a total experience you had! I have always wanted to go to the far north.

Do you see the wild wolves of Minnesota and Wisconsin?
