Locally known as the Roman hill , probably the site of a motte & bailey.
Castell Du is known by local Welsh speakers as Banc y Rhyfel(the mound of the battle)and was built by the invading Normans circa 1106 to control an important river crossing into the commote of Gwyr(Gower)
