This is at least what Paulus stated when he spoke to the Areopag. I think the ancient Greek were well aware of the God of the jews and - later - christians. After 333 BC Alexander the Great and his successors Seleukos I. Nikator and Ptolemaios dominated the area, founded cities there and brought history writers. Later, Strabo lived in the area and collected histories of the people in Syria, Jordan and around. I didn't read his books entirely but am sure he knew about JHWH and EL - so the very well educated members of the Areopag might have found Paulus' suggestion to identify their unknown God with JHWH a bit doubtful, at least. The Epikurean fraction, of course, might have made a mockery of it.
