The trap door in the floor at the bottom was for the powder store. Powder could then be winched up to the gun decks as needed, hence the circular stairs.

I have a similar shot in my collection. the only difference is the wieving UP... By the way, You are now in my preferred list.

No lift I'm afraid, although originally there was a pully system to lift ammunition up to the gun levels from the magazines, which are located below the trap door in the floor.
