There are so many views of the Treasury at Petra. How dare I add another?? But I have skimmed through the hundreds of thumbnails and see that many are taken straight on, and some angled from the other side, but to my surprise, this perspective has gone unappreciated! So here it is, yet one more picture of the Treasury ...

Larry Workman on January 4, 2009

I was skimming the Petra tag to look at others like yours and I came to this thumbnail thinking here is a good one, and it was this one.

Very well done! Two Y* in a row.

great new perspective, marilyn :) petra photos always remind me of the "hole 'n' the rock" house south of moab, utah, but on a much grander scale than that little house, of course! thanks for all your photos and the stories too. cheers, brian

  • Wow, great shot!
  • Since I saw the "Indiana Jones" movie in the mid 80's I wanted to go to that spot. And now, when you placed this pic at the right place in the map, at least I have the correct coordinate to visit that imposing place. ;-)

Nice documentary - I enjoy following your trip !

Youre right! Its so well known that everyone who hears the name "Petra" immediately sees the front! from this angle is so much greater to see! Good idea. Gr, Ed.

Thank you, Larry, Brian, Poly, Bruce, pingu, and Ed.

Larry, your report gave me an extra smile!

Poly, just don't expect the secret rooms/passages that Indy found. I hate to break it to you, but they're fictional!

And I'm honored, Larry and Bruce by the Y*.

I recognize now two reasons why I like this point of view. Because it's from a bit of a rise, it gives a less distorted perspective than the common, head-on, upwards shot. And from this height, the inevitable tourists blend into the picture better, instead of standing as intrusions in front of the centre of interest!

Hank Waxman on January 5, 2009

Marilyn, while I'm cheering this shot along with the rest, its surprising to be the first to compliment you on the presence and treatment of the people in your shot. Very few Petrs pictures give us an opportunity to measure the scale of this place against our most common denominator, a person. It makes this view extra special.

Marilyn Whiteley on January 5, 2009

Yes, Hank, thanks for that good observation. People certainly can give scale, and I'm glad you think that they do so in an appropriate way here. There are also ways that are inappropriate to my eyes, as when they are doing distracting things in the foreground or are sliced through because of poor composition or editing.

Incredibly fantastic rocky architecture :)

Conrad Nay on January 6, 2009

Great capture Marilyn! I've always wanted to see them in person and you have provided the kind of images that almost get me there without the cost of airplanes etc.! Nice touch with the tourists - great sense of scale.

Daniela Brocca on January 6, 2009

That's another of my dreams, Marilyn.Like Poly I remember when in the movie they arrive here. There is a path in the rocks and unexpectedly the fantastic view of the Treasury. It seems so huge.

Cheers,Daniela

Many thanks, Janina, Conrad, Daniela, oisiulA, Jani, blai, Jurgis, oronbb, and Kasia, and I appreciate the YS, blai. I'm glad you like this point of view on a very familiar subject.

Our guide tried to surprise us with the view of the Treasury by having us look the other way, but I was watching so intently for it that I noticed it anyway!

Daniela and Conrad, I do hope you get there.
