The Giants Causeway is one of the most famous landmark features in the UK. The hexagonal basalt columns formed from the rapid cooling of lava from an ancient volcano. The formation continues below the sea and reappears on the Isle of Staffa (Scotland) at Fingal's Cave.
Here you can see that the columns are not actually hexangonal, but are actually irregular.
Thank you for posting this. We sailed past Staffa once but the weather was not suitable for getting in close. I have always wanted to see those amazing basalt columns up close!
