This is the head of Haweswater (a.k.a. Mardale Head) Haweswater was a natural lake whose level was raised by a dam to create a larger reservoir to supply drinking water for Manchester Corporation. In the process, the village of Mardale was drowned. It lay in the extreme right of the photo. The field walls and lanes can still be seen when the water level is very low. Read Alfred Wainwright's walking guide "The Far Eastern Fells". He walked the streets of Mardale, quenched his thirst in it's pub, and laments it's loss with dignity and eloquence.

The Peak called High Street is not actually in this photograph. It is at the top of Rough Crag, the sharp edge disappearing to the right. The Peak visible to the right of Harter Fell is actually Mardale Ill Bell.
