There were a series of eruptions in 1980 following the massive May 18 eruption. On July 22nd, 1980 there were a series of large ash bursts accompanying the destruction of an early lava dome. None of the later eruptions approached the size of the May 18 event, but this eruption did produce a pumice flow that nearly reached the shore of Spirit Lake. Gradually over the next few years the eruptive active decreased, finally allowing the area around the volcano to again be opened to the public. I worked 30 years as the recreation operations manager and later recreation planner for Mount St. Helens NVM.

Jim,

Awesome photo! This is one of the best photos I have seen of St Helens (not the May 18th).

I know someone who just finished the Liberty Ridge route on Rainer and he and his partner had to bolt because of the eruption. He said it came at them like a purple cloud.

Thanks Randy,

It was quite a day when the eruption occurred. The father of a co-worker was climbing Mount Adams on the morning of May 18 and had an experience similar to that of your friends on Rainier.
