Thank you for your nice comments about this photo. I did some research on this guy. He is a California Brown Pelican with "adult winter non-breeding plumage". The scientific name is "Pelecanus Occidentalis Californicus". David

Lisahunsicker, the truth is I don't. This shot was done with a Canon G10 (15 mega-pixel point and shoot) set at "super fine" and "vivid color". Thank you very much for your visit. David. My Contest - "CALIFORNIA DREAMING"

Excellent foto David - Valerio
Valerio, thanks for the nice comments. David
How lucky to get this wonderful shot. Really shows off the details and colors. I have only seen them in the air, so thanks for sharing.
Julie, yes I was lucky. But lucky mostly due to where I live. This resort town of Santa Cruz on the Pacific is only 1 hour from San Francisco and 45 minutes from Silicon Valley - San Jose. Seals, gulls, birds like this one frequent the area and they are not afraid of people. Shots like this are not guaranteed but commonly available. Keep in mind this sunny beach day is on New Year's Day 2009. Cheers and many thanks for your visit to my galley! David from the Bay Area
