Gernot B,

Greetings from England.

The landscape looks to be lovely walking country.

Do you know what plants make the purple area in the foreground?

Regards Peter

Hello pedrocut, thanks for the visit. The purple flowers are called "Weidenröschen" (Epilobium angustifolium). I´m sorry but i don´t know the english Name.

Thank you Gernot B

The common name for the flower is Rosebay Willowherb in English. It is a quite common flower but I, personally, have not seen it in such a dense and confined cluster, it adds lovely colour to your photo.

It is an interesting plant from a British point of view as in the 1700’s it was considered a garden plant and a rare escape to be a rare woodland plant. But in the 20th Century there was an explosion in population and it became one of the most successful colonizers of wasteland.

During the First World War it flourished in the woodland that had been felled (and probably burnt) to supply timber for the war effort. And in the Second World War it flourished in the ruins after bombing raids and became known as Bombweed. It is still called by some as Fireweed.

(Info from Flora Britannica)

Perhaps the area in your shot had been at some point burned and provides a haven for it?

Very Best Wishes, Peter

Peter, many thanks for the information. I´ve heard that this plant likes areas with much kalk or nitrogen in the soil. After a fire is also very fertile soil. The "Wasserkuppe" is an area which is used by gliders since nearly 100 years. Perhaps the area has been bombed in World War II due to its importance as training for pilots.

Best wishes, Gernot
