hi, great pictures. I remember seeing this enclosure from the bus/lorry a few times as I travelled back and forth between Merowe and Khartoum, some years ago now...it was a rather striking landmark, with an air of mystery. Any ideas about it , when and why it was built ?

Thanks scorzonera. Well, you really got off the beaten track, didn't you? During 2005 and early 2007 the mini-busses from Omdurman to Merowe would always cut the corner across the desert from TamTam to AlGurair. It was always an exciting trip with a 50-50 chance of getting stuck. And also the chance to see some beautiful desert. Now the road from ElDebba to Merowe has been paved so they don't cut the corner any more.

In Jan 2005 we travelled to Gebel Barkal in our own 4-wheel drive Toyota and the archaeologists wanted to stop at the enclosure to take a close look. We spent a couple hours doing a surface collection. All we found were a few recent sherds I think. There were no signs of habitation. Its age is still a mystery but it looks like a very well-built animal enclosure. Sorry I don't have a better answer.

Thanks for your reply. It will remain an enigma. Yes remember doing this trip, Khartoum to Merowe via Korti, before the Eid. In a lorry with 50 or more others jammed in the back. At one point sitting right at the back of the lorry with a Sudanese gentleman hanging onto my legs so I wouldn;t fall out. Getting stuck in the sand and taking an hour to move 100 metres, with the sand ladders. Exciting times - it was 1983 and there was no tarmac at all ! Once again great pictures and thanks for posting.
