Both of your versions of this sunset are beautiful. It makes me a little upset I go to work in the dark, and leave work in the dark (only Monday - Thursday though).

Thanks Spence. I do enjoy that my job allows me flexibility so that I can enjoy the sunrises and sunset. Also, I can watch the sunrise from my office. Sounds like you work for the state! ;-)

Hi Ben this is a very beautiful sunset/rise and your title is very fitting it looks like a beam of light shooting straight up, is this snow in the foreground? sounds like you have a very cool job.

Warm Wishes, Karen.

Cool shot Ben. I believe this phenomenon is called a "Sun Pillar". It is created by the reflection of light from ice crystals with near horizontal parallel planar surfaces. I've seen and photographed this a couple of times. This is a beauty. Well spotted.

Best regards, Tom

Karen, thanks for the comment! Yes, this was in snow and was actually taken at the cemetery.

Tom, I thought that's what it was called. Thanks for the information. This was the first time I've seen this particular phenomenon.
