Gooday Jeff, it's been a long time. Your photos are great- I knew they would be. I was interested to know why this is called the Gough Battery. You may remember that my grandfather Harry Gough mined on the tier as did my father. Is there any connection?

Hi Paul, This battery was and still is to some extent called the New Moon battery it was originally owned by a McGough in the 1880's. I havent followed up on this but no doubt there is a connection with your family.
Cheers
Jeff

Hi Goughie,
The sign at the site says :- Goughs Battery Mining in this area commenced in 1875 but it was not until November 1931 that Bill Gough was appointed works manager for Charles Hawker. The ten head stamp battery was formerly used at the Michael Mine and was re-erected at this site. (plus more about the history of the mine).
The St Helens History Room may well have more on your Goughs. They seem well organised re. the tin mining history.

Moon Mine / Gough's Battery
Discovery of the rich deposits of detrital tin along Hope Creek is generally attributed to a party including Christopher Isles, Charles McGough and A. Wagenknecht, itinerant miners from the depressed Mathinna goldfield who, in 1875, fossicked their way onto Blue Tier in search of the source of tin recently discovered along the tributaries of the George River.
