As you say it in your comment above, a hundred years ago the town was different. The shots taken around 1890 by Jacob Riis show it. Thank you Hank for sharing the images and what is behind them.

It is the area where many of the immigrants to the United States settled when they first arrived...along with my great grand parents who came from the area around Suwałki Poland.

Hi Bosja. Henry Miller was born in a part of Mahattan called Yorkville. That's around East 86th Street and York Avenue photo courtesy of jonathan.nyc. I'm not sure he wasn't a block further south because I know that corner and I remember all the buildings being tall. This area was heavily populated by people of German descent (which Miller was), and came to be known as Germantown among the New Yorkers who knew the area.
