Looking up a well-like shaft at the end of a sub-tunnel of Tunnel 3 of the North Centre Bastion.

Click to see the entrance to the sub-tunnel and the top of another shaft near the entrance.

Standard Info:

The North Center Bastion is only part of Dover's extensive Napoleonic defenses - click on Western Heights and then check the tag list for all the locations covered (eg Drop Redoubt, Grand Shaft, North Entrance - more will be added as time goes on).

Also see St Martin's Battery

Wow! Must be really haunted! Look at all those orbs!;-\

Just prior to taking the photo I had been rummaging around in the dusty remains at the bottom of the shaft. Keep it a secret but I've a sneaky suspicion there's a connection between dust and orbs... (that's a joke by the way)

As far as orbs are concerned, the 'glass orb' photo is my favourite.

Far more intriguing are the North Centre Bastion's ghost images.

Yes! I looked at them. I just learned about these orbs while visiting Gettysburg Battlefield this summer. Then one followed us to the woods, as you can see with this, which I hope you will enjoy. As you can see the children are terrified.

Wait that's looking up? I though you were looking down. We had these "orbs" in my summer camp back in June-July.

I'm not an expert on these things, Daniel, but the orbs in your photo look like those referred to by the Canon letter in the second 'Comment' of the Blue Orb 1 image.

Just before I took the above pic I had been rummaging around in the small pit at the bottom of the shaft (finding broken torches, personal attack alarms, and other interesting stuff) and no doubt tons of dust had been dislodged.

On the other hand, there are orbs and there are orbs. I like 'blue orbs' (and blue orb 2 is bigger than 1) but my very favourite is the 'glass orb'.

Also got a photo of an orb at the Courts Folly which is a 200 year-old 'lost' miniature castle hidden on the cliffs of Dover.

This shaft is almost at the very end of the right-hand side of Tunnel 3 on the satellite view. To get to it you have to cross the cave-in (which might be even more unstable after the earthquake which affected Dover a couple of weeks after these photos were taken) and then climb up onto this sub-tunnel. The shaft in the above photo is at the end of the sub-tunnel.

This shaft goes straight 'up'. It's at the end of the sub-tunnel which also has the shaft/well going 'down'.
