I returned to this farm building in 2005, 27 years later. Click here to see it in its 2005 derelict state.

My 1978 visit was my first exploration of the farming district from which a family of my ancestors migrated to Australia, in 1865. It was deeply significant exploration for me, especially as I had for the first time proven from the local church records that this was indeed the community from which they had migrated. It added many chapters to our family story.

On my return in 2005, I had by this time discovered locals to whom I was distantly related for we derived from common ancestors, and these people were as excited as I was to visit historic family sites, and share our different histories.

I am very pleased that you have appreciated this farm dwelling, even though this is an historic photo and in B & W. Merci beaucoup, Domi. It has deteriorated far more in the last 25 years than in the previous 125 years. And it allows me to go back to the era of my great great grandparents, in my imagination, with ease.

songv, reports on December 4, 2009, that:

I am sorry to say that when I travelled to Dithmarschen this summer the house was completely gone, not a trace of it was left. It really broke my heart.

I understand your emotion songv. So I am very pleased therefore that I photographed it in 2005 as well as in 1978!
