My understanding is that this memorial represents those from Zwolle who fell in WWII.

I'm particularly interested as it was discovered about 10yrs ago that my Opa (grandfather) was the subject for the sculpture.

Some background... my Opa (Taeke de Jong, 1922-2002) was an underground fighter against the German invasion of the Netherlands, and later fought against the Japanese invasion of Indonesia.

One of his comrades used to draw him during the war, from which this sculpture was later created. By this time however, Taeke had started a new life overseas, and it was about 50yrs after the memorial was erected that he finally found out about it! I haven't been to see it yet, so I'm very happy to find such a great photo on the net.

Hi Owen. Thanks for your explanation. When I see a memorial then intrigued it me, so I take a picure. And it is good to stand still by what happened.

Are you living in the Netherlands or also in Australia as your Opa?

Greetings from Holland, Huizen. Christien
