Dunno how old this photo is, but last time I was here - late 1980's - the chalk banks each side of the tunnel mouth had slid down and virtually blocked the tunnel entrance. You had to climb over the mound and get into the tunnel through a gap just below the top of the arch. Used to ride our bikes through here when we were kids. Over a mile in the pitch black - great fun. Except when the local farmer caught you trying to cross his field on the way back.
