Wow! What a cool photo! I like the backpack... things looked simpler then. Thanks for sharing your 1961 photos!
That is an amazing look into the past. beautiful up there. I didnt make to elk lake last year but I spent some time at mollman.
Thanks ... it is a beautiful area. On the same trip I spent a couple of days at Mollman (caught a huge rainbow on 4th cast and that was all--then read later in a Montana fishing guide that the lake was barren!). It must have been restocked since then?
Must have been, I didnt have any problems catching any fish. I kept my brothers and myself in good supply. We were there for four days. Great sizes too. I was fishing in the 2nd lake off of the little island that goes out into the lake. Did you grow up in the mission valley?
No, but I lived in Missoula area off and on from mid 50s to mid 60s (the U, working, etc). Loved it ... and especially the Missions. Fortunately our son ended up in the Bozeman area. Have to say there are great places in that area too (Crazies, Bridgers, Hyalite, etc. etc.). You?
I grew up right near the base of the mountains by Ronan. I live in missoula right now. My dad and his parents grew up there as well. Used to hike all over there on weekends. My brothers and I are working on exploring the whole range.
I love the range too! I have found that most of the so called "experts" on areas really don't know as much as they think... You just have to go find out for yourself what is up there~
I want to go into the crazies so bad, hopefully I can make it there in the year or two. I love the old pictures too, can't wait to get out there again this year and do things like this! Happy hiking fellas, see you on the trail
Have you ever been over here to WA? We have some awesome canyonlands, the cascades, and the olympics... I love the bitteroots, selkirks, missions, cabinets, sawtooths, rockies, etc... But to me there is nothing like the mountains we have over here!
Hoss, I have yet to hike in WA. I moved to Lolo last summer and am working my way through the bitterroot mountains. still have yet to do very much actual hiking here though. I plan on getting to elk lake this summer.
I would suggest you come visit and check out the country we have over here...
