Another idyllic summer day. Your canal looks much like a neat swimming lane complete with ladders - except, of course, for the boat.

Well done!

Thank you JF,

I see what you mean, I had not noticed. One could imagine someone increasing the flow for the more powerful swimmers.

I believe that, in years gone by, many youngsters would swim in the English Canals, but I don’t fancy it now!

Best Regards Peter

Now you make me wonder - what has changed in the channels from then until now?

Having spoke to a couple of old chaps it appears that quite a few lads would swim in the canals between the Wars, but as the commercial viability of the canals reduced the channels became silted up. The disuse led to the dumping of all sorts of rubbish and British Waterways, the controllers at present, prohibit swimming due to the danger and risk of disease.

It must be said that in recent times the canals have a new lease of life for leisure activities, and provide great wildlife areas.

Regards, Peter

Further to the above comment I have a picture from BrownhillsBob of the place where my father used to swim. Now it has a massive interchange of Motorways above it!

Thanks for the link. I am getting a sense of the countryside with all the canals. Sounds a lovely place to walk and cycle. I see what you mean about the swimming.....sadly things seem to be changing everywhere.

Pedrocut, I missed the info above at first visit. Very interesting info - glad to hear things are looking up with the canals. They are a lovely feature of the countryside and seem to be a big part of life for those of you who live there.
