These spectacular clouds were created by Hurricane Flossie when the storm reached Hawai'i in August 2007. The hurricane broke up just before it reached Hawai'i.
This photo was taken the evening before Flossie was predicted to make landfall.

Thanks for stopping by again, Maria. It wasn't as scary as my words might suggest. Flossie approached from the southeast and Keahou is on the west side of the island with the entire Mauna Loa massif in between. The Hilo area (on the east side of the island) got heavy rain, but Flossie had weakened so much that it almost totally disintegrated after it hit Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea. Just in case, though, we were prepared with enough supplies to last four or five days without power or transportation.
The most notable effect of Flossie on the west side was spectacular sunsets.
