I remember this day so well. I had just graduated from college and was in my first job at a PR firm in Chicago. I was preparing to start my first press conference for client CitiBank when suddenly the camera crews started packing up.
I said "Whoa, whoa, where are you going? We're about to start." They told me a United flight on its way to Chicago had just crashed and they were redirected to O'Hare. I had virtually no one at my press conference, but suffice to say once I got home and turned on the TV, I understood why. What an awful day, but what amazing work by the Sioux City emergency teams -- not to mention Capt. Al Haynes and the rest of the flight crew.
just finished reading "Flight 232" by Laurence Gonzales and published in 2014. It seems like a very thorough analysis of the whole incident, but I would love to hear the thoughts of someone who was there, and who has read the book.
I would have loved to have found the faulty fan disc that Janice Sorenson found in her corn field while she was cutting the corn down on Oct 10 1989.The combine bumped the disc that was wedged into the ground. She called authorities and people from G.E. came right out. They collected the 120,000.oo dollars for the reward and donated much of it to charities.Back in the early 90s i was becoming a plumber in N W Indiana. We had a job that contracters redid this womans home for ADA capabilities because she messed her back up so bad in this crash. She said her husband was in the seat right next to her and he was killed instantly. Its amazing that 184 people out of 296 survived. Some even walked away without a scratch. But many children were on this flight because U A had a special ....children under 12 flew for a penny.RIP to the ones who perished.

You were at the scene?
Yes but not on the day it happened. We arrived the next day afterward and stayed until the pilot was released from the Hospital.
