Beeston Castle sits on a steep hill set high above the Cheshire plain. Note the hill's shadow on the photo location picture! The castle was built in 1225 by Ranulf, the sixth Earl of Chester, but subsequently comandered by the Crown. It fell into ruin after the English Civil War when Royalist troops were besieged by Cromwells forces. The castle has three lines of defences and proved impossible to take by force.
