There's obviously some Vietnam - China hostility going on here. Seems to me that these islands are much closer to Vietnam than to China. China would seem to have the least good case in this dispute.
I don't know about the history of these islands but I do know that Taiping Island has a Taiwanese military base on it and so I'd say it currently belongs to Taiwan and not to China anyway. After all, Taiwan is an independent country with a strong military. If Vietnam can't have it then I hope Taiwan hangs on to it. The Chinese would put some stinking factory on it.
