This rock formation runs either side of the (old) Severn Bridge between England (this side) and Wales, near Chepstow. It is an important geological site. The rock layers can clearly be seen in the picture. The lower red-brown rocks belong to the Triassic which in England was desert formations. The paler layer above represents a shallow Raheatian Sea spreading over the land at the start of the Jurassic period. The Westbury bone bed is a layer noted for is abundance of fish and reptile bones. There is another stratum which is Britain's most significant source of fossil insects from the Mesozoic.
