San Giorgio Maggiore is one of the islands of Venice was probably occupied in the Roman period.
The island of San Giorgio already had a church in the 9th century and a Benedictine monastery was founded in 982. The monks drained the marshes of the island and the monastery was destroyed by an earthquake in 1223.
The church of San Giorgio Maggiore is one of the most impressive Venetian buildings by Andrea Palladio renaissance architect. The design for the facade was completed in 1566, but with his death in 1580, work was only started in 1597 and concluded in 1610.
The master did not live to see the building completed. The island also boasts a small port was home to the Venetian artillery.
