This rather irks me.

It was initially put on display as the "acid ball" from the paper mill nearby. It was a symbol of Salem's industry. But, of course, it looked too much like a globe to be good enough to symbolize industry and small-thinking individuals decided that it needed to be "dumbed down" so it could appeal to the pre-schoolers and thus the "Eco-Ball" was hatched.

One has to wonder if these same folks aren't now raiding the pound for stray cats they can paint stripes on for their "Tigers of the Jungle" display.....

The only thing I recall about the acid ball was that there was 3 ways it could go.

1 The eco earth ball.

2 Polished chrome fountain

3 Solar System idea. Where the acid ball was the Sun and in various parks out from here would be the other planets. Making a park out in Jefferson the site for the planet Pluto.

I was un-aware of anything to symbolizing Industry

Personally I liked the solar system idea. But maybe I'm just partial to the idea because of my love of outerspace. Have you checked out the new feature on Google Earth that gives you a view of the night sky?

Thanks for looking

...so i have lived here for years and have always heard that it is full of acid. i thought it was an old wives tale...so is it full of acid? and if so why the heck is it still sitting 100 feet from the river?

No Acid left in the Ball. If memory serves the ball was drained years ago prior to the City purchasing the ball and the land.
