The sky in that picture is pretty blue even though it was dark night. Could be, that the lense was open for a longer time till the ligthning happened, so the sky is a bit overexposed. But this has a nice side effect to the picture.
It took several stormy nights and a lot of non succesful shots till I've got some usable pictures.
To catch a lightning is in indeed very difficult and requires also a portion of fortune. Best way is a dark place without any other sources of light and put the camera (wide-angle-lens) on a tripod. Push the release button (exposure time: as long as possible, if possible: infinite / focal length: infinite) and wait till the next lightning. After the lightning (hope firmly it was in the range of your lens) close the shutter and start a new photograph.
Fantastic Ti is funny is it not that the harder you try the luckier you get, It is the same with some of my photos only the photographer see all the failures we have to get that one really good shot Yellow star

We dont get brilliant lightning in London, plus it's never really dark here, so I have to rely on when I'm on holiday etc.
