The sacred city of Abydos was the site of many ancient temples, including a royal necropolis where early kings (starting from the late predynasic period) were entombed. It is located at about 160 km north of Luxor, it can be reached from there by car or with a taxi but you have to travel in a convoi with other cars and the police. The temple of Seti I was erected in the 19th dynasy (about 1290 BC). There is also the famous "Abydos King List" which contains the names of nearly all Pharaos starting from the 1st dynasty. Behind the temple there is a interesting building called Osireion thought to be connected with the worship of Osiris. Wonderful place to visit but usually the police won't give you much time to see the site.
